Summary for updating the 578 for use of the BT01 handmic
Right now, these instructions will get the BT01 working via the corded connection method. Sometime later I hope to add the bluetooth setup instructions as well.
NOTE: I strongly suggest setting up the 578 for the BT01 in two steps;
step one is getting it to work via the corded method first. If you can't get it to operate directly connected to your 578... then the BT method will not work either. Once you have the BT01 working via the corded method, then do the last step (getting it to work wirelessly).
*Determine your 578's version
Look at the label on the side-rear of the radio, near the power cable and GPS antenna jack. It should identify if the radio is a "Plus" or "Pro, and a version "II" or "III". Although the 1.17 CPS works for either, the firmware file is different.FYI, both my 578's were the "G" microprocessor version.
When you go to update the main radios firmware and you accidentally choose the wrong one (Plus firmware on a Pro radio, or vice versa) the firmware update program will alert you to this.
if the FW upgrade routine included with the CPS does not work (errors-out before even attempting to)... there is a standalone program for this; download HERE
*Download the new CPS and firmware, unzip it, and install it
Download the required 578 UVIII-PLUS CPS and firmware HERE (FW ver 2.04)Download the required 578 UVIII-PRO CPS and firmware HERE (FW ver 1.17)
* Before doing the FW update
read and save your 578's current programming (codeplug) into the newly installed CPS (and your older CPS too, just to be safe)
* Using the new CPS program, update the firmware into your 578.
1.) Power the radio "ON", let ot boot up to your main channel screen.2.) Press and Hold both the MENU and EXIT keys, and power the radio "OFF" You may see a non-
relevant message on the display, keep holding the 3 buttons until the screen is off. After the
screen is off, still keep holding the MENU and EXIT keys, release the power button and wait for a
while,you get the blinking red light over the power-off button. Now you can release the MENU
and EXIT keys.
3.) The red LED light should now blinking, and the radio has entered into firmware update mode.
4.) Use the USB cable to connect radio to your PC.
5.) Open the radio Computer Programming Software (CPS) and go to TOOLS > Firmware Update
Once started, be patient... let the firmware update procedure complete before moving on to the next step
Note1: If the update procedure in the CPS "balks" at the very beginning... then you can do the upgrade procedure using a stand alone program. Download HERE
Note 2: FYI, both my 578's were the "G" microprocessor version.
* Perform the radio reset procedure.
Although the BT01 might appear to be working via the corded method without a the radio being reset... it will act strangely. DO THE RESET !D578UV Mobile Radio
Radio Reset / MCU Reboot
1) To Reset the Radio: Press and Hold the two front panel keys P2 and the Channel Knob (the one
above the microphone connector) Hold these two keys while turning on the radio and it will reboot the
radio into the Reset Mode.
2) The radio Reset Screen will appear and ask you to Confirm the reset by pressing the Menu key on
the front panel. The reset itself will take a minute or more.
3) After completing the reset, the Calibration Date settings screen will open. You need to set the correct
information by using the Channel Knob. Pushing the Channel Knob will navigate through the GMT, Date and
Time fields, Rotating the Channel Knob will allow you to change the settings. When finished setting the data, use
the Menu button to Confirm and the radio will reboot.
* Using the new CPS, write your saved "Pre-FW Update" codeplug back into the radio.
* Go into the new CPS, near the top is "TOOLS"
go into "OPTIONS" there and check all the option boxes your D578 has; including the now-showing "BT Handmic". Then re-save the codeplug again... "Post FW Update" or whatever you want to name it.
* One more thing...
The RESET done earlier also cleared out your Digital Contact List. Download the latest USER.CSV (or whatever file you use for that) and write that into the radio.Download the USER.CSV file HERE
* One last thing
Check your radios APRS settings; sometimes those settings get changed during a FW update. COMMON SETTING, APRS
