Yvonne's Greenhouse
Ventilation
Beginning with the
entry door, we used a storm door that had a screen from top
to bottom. During the winter the screen is replaced with a
glass storm-window. Not visible in the picture is a second
storm door on the other side of the jamb. We also keep this
second door closed during the winter, which forms an air
barrier.
This temperature
controlled vent needs no electricity. It fully closes when
the temperature drops to 40 degrees F and fully opens at 60
degrees F. This vent is most effective in the winter when
the doors are closed and the indoor temperature rises due to
the large surface area of the greenhouse glazing combined
with a sunny day.
A small dual window
fan is installed in the floor over a screen. It draws cool
moist air from underneath the foundation. A thermostat
turns it on when the indoor temperature reaches 70 degrees
F.
This 16" attic fan
blows open a louvered vent panel. This moves the majority of
the heat out of the greenhouse and is located at the top of
the wall. A thermostat turns this on when the inside
temperature reaches 75 to 80 degrees F.
We purchased bulk
shade cloth and sewed a casing in the top and bottom. We
threaded ropes through the casings and anchored the ropes to
the edges of the roof. The shade cloth is installed from
late June through mid September. We found that temperatures
soared above 100 degrees F without the cloth.
